Manager Associate Director, Africa
Job Purpose This role involves contributing to Control Risks’ analysis on Southern
Africa for a range of subscription products and bespoke consulting tasks.
Responsibilities include writing daily updates for Control Risks’
subscription products, supporting analysts in responding to queries from
clients and conducting research in support of bespoke consulting
engagements. The role may involve travel, and will require effective
liaison with colleagues in London and Johannesburg, as well as with
other Control Risks offices in the region and around the world.
Tasks and
Responsibilities Demonstrating expertise:
Maintain a high level of regional and country expertise through
research, attendance at relevant seminars and research trips.
Create and maintain country-, regional and sector-specific databases
as required.
Build effective relationships with the Africa analysis team and
London-based colleagues, as well as other Africa-focused experts
throughout Control Risks, including in Lagos and Nairobi offices.
Develop and effectively manage government, academic, journalistic
and business contacts in the region and share knowledge about
sources with other members of the desk.
Writing for online subscription services:
Contribute to daily updates on political and security developments in
the region of relevance to Control Risks’ clients subscribing to
Control Risks’ online products.
Update and maintain online country background material according
to a schedule set by senior members of the team.
Contribute to the production of country-specific scenarios for online
publication.
Liaise with editors to respond to queries on writing and style promptly
and ensure that analysis published is to a consistently high standard.
Liaise with colleagues globally as required on transnational or multicountry
coverage.
Liaise with Control Risks’ joint venture Travel Security Services
(TSS) to ensure timely, consistent and unambiguous advice on
business continuity and travel through relevant subscription services
available to clients.
Consulting and client engagement:
Undertake research for bespoke projects on the region under the
direction of senior analysts.
Assist in writing proposals for bespoke consulting work on the region,
in consultation with analysts and consultants.
Write customised political, security and operational risk assessments
on specific assigned countries for individual clients under the
direction of senior colleagues.
Propose innovative ways to present facts and analysis to clients and
assist in preparing the presentation of research in formats including
PowerPoint.
Support analysts in responding to client queries on the region in a
timely fashion.
Represent Control Risks at client meetings in support of senior
colleagues from analysis, client liaison or other departments.
Marketing and business development
Contribute to company-wide promotional publications, press releases
and sales initiatives.
Respond to media queries on the region as required under the
direction of more senior members of the Africa analysis team.
Knowledge and
Experience
Essential
Knowledge and understanding of key political, operational and
security risk issues in Southern Africa.
Practical experience of living, working or travelling in the region.
Proven ability to write and verbally communicate with authority and
clarity.
Masters’ degree (or equivalent) in relevant discipline.
Previous professional experience of risk analysis on the region and
familiarity with business-focused research.
Preferred
Ability to understand and communicate in Portuguese.
