Job Description

The Director of Perioperative Services Surgery contributes to the goals of the hospital by generating new surgical business, developing and controlling operational and capital budgets, intervening and solving potential patient safety problems, and developing the personnel, physical environment, material and organizational systems to provide competitive, cost effective OR services. Acts as a liaison and public relations representative between other departments of the hospital and the community. Assists in designing a competitive structure and controls the department's inventory of equipment and supplies. Provides quality care in an efficient and safe manner consistent with the standards of care based on each patients requirements relative to his or her appropriate age group.

Explores required resource and revenue impact of new business with potential clients, i.e. M.D.
Analyzes cost/benefit of new services for the hospital.
Communicates and recommends new business opportunities with cost/benefit analysis to the COO, if approval closes transaction with interested client.
Implements new programs to assume cost effective patient care in cooperation with other hospital departments.
Establishes working relationships with key players, i.e. SPD Manager, community agencies, neighboring facilities.
Represents the department at hospital and community events.
Communicates in verbal and written formats clearly and openly.
Attends to members of the public and professional community who wish to have their dissatisfaction with the Surgery department, hospital, and health care industry heard by the Department Director.
Interprets/represents practice and role of Nursing Department to allied health care professionals and physicians effectively.
Shares departments accomplishments in which promote the goals of the hospital in the appropriate public media.
Forecasts and analyzes budget expenditure in light of revenue impact for the department.
Strategizes budget reductions to maximize hospital revenue.
Strategizes capital equipment needs with physicians and clinical coordinators.
Solicits physician input on capital equipment.
Develops, prioritizes, justifies, and submits capital equipment budget by deadline.
Monitors budget expenditures in all department's cost centers.
Works with Chief of Surgery to solicit physician support for cost containment.
Uses financial statements to adjust resources use and productivity.
Communicates budget allocations/reductions effectively to staff, Medical Directors, and physicians when appropriate and keeps cost containment alive in all the department's staff.
Teaches the clinical coordinators to provide cost effective materials management in the OR.
Creates competitive fee structure for OR services and supplies and monitors fee structures of competitor facilities to maintain competitive pricing.
Tracks national, state, and private carrier reimbursement trends for surgical services and shares with COO as appropriate.
Collaborates with department directors and CFO to develop systems to receive, inventory, maintain, and control department equipment and supplies
Develops systems to control and monitor the OR suite environment according to official regulations.
Researches cost effective ways to decrease the Surgery Department's inventory of materials and to improve purchasing.
Identifies real and potential problems affecting the department and discusses physician related issues with Medical Chiefs.
Chooses and implements a defensible solution appropriate for given constituents and resources.
Solves problems unresolved by clinical coordinators with material, staff, and MDs.
Appraises the appropriate hospital personnel of sensitive, emergent, and potential problems with departmental/hospital wide impact.
Prioritizes and seeks COO follow up as needed.
Coaches clinical coordinator on proactive, systematic problem solving practices.
Develops, implements, and evaluates an ongoing program to assume quality patient care in the department using appropriate hospital resources, i.e. Medical Directors, PT Coordinator, Infection Control Nurse.
Implements changes to improve perceived problems in department services. Researches methods to improve nursing practice in departments on an ongoing basis.
Develops standards of care based on systematic analysis and data collection.
Refers unresolved medical practice issues to Medical Directors for resolution.
Orients and teaches immediate subordinates.
Gives feedback and helps problem solve immediate subordinates regularly.
Clarifies own role and documents job performance annually.
Sets expectations for clinical coordinator's participation in educational activities to learn skills required to perform job roles competently.
Assists peers and department staff in generating and implementing ideas to improve productivity in the hospital.
Precepts selected graduates and visiting students.

Job Requirements

Experience:
At least 5 years of Management Experience required.
 License, Registrations, and Certifications:
Current LA State RN Licensure
