A well-known Spice blending company requires the above to be responsible for Product Development and Quality within the food industry.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Researching, developing and analysing new products and processes in accordance with specific development briefs.
  • Identifying new product opportunities and researching developments.
  • Delivering nutritional, functional and sensory product improvements to maximise consumer appeal and competitive product superiority.
  • Conducting panel analysis on existing and new product specifications.
  • Understanding of sensory and consumer research techniques.
  • Ensuring contract facilities are in compliance with the company’s standards and requirements including inspection, training and quality management.
  • Assisting with the successful launch of all new developments.
  • Establishing and maintaining food safety programs and systems to ensure corporate policies and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Offering technical support to Production and Quality Departments with regards to troubleshooting.
  • Liaising with internal and external customers.
  • Sourcing and evaluating new or alternative raw materials for product development.
  • Preparing samples of both trial and benchmark products for user trials.
  • Keeping up to date with changes in the RSA legislation regarding labelling, claims, permitted ingredients, as well as maximum permitted levels in the different types of products.

Minimum requirements for the role:

  • A Food Sciences qualification either a BSc or Diploma in Food Technology is essential.
  • Minimum of 5 – 10 years’ experience.
  • Must have spice development experience but the company will consider looking at a MSC Meat Sciences graduate who they can train up into the role.
  • Previous experience as a food scientist with the ability to formulate for meat.
  • Extensive understanding of meat blocks and recipes is essential.
  • The ability to run trials.
  • Must be able to formulate recipes for the meat industry.
  • Previous experience working with meat is essential.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be computer literate.
Salary package is highly negotiable depending on experience gained.
