Job description
BBC Monitoring (BBCM) provides news and information based on our monitoring of open source media from over 150 countries in more than 70 languages. It is an important part of the BBC's newsgathering operation, with journalists based in the UK and in international bureaux, and provides content for a range of BBC platforms.
Our extensive operation enables us to provide insightful and reliable coverage of political, economic, security and media news.
Our round-the-clock monitoring of TV, radio, press, digital media and news agencies is also provided to commercial clients and the UK and US governments.
Role ResponsibilityAs a Digital Journalist, you’ll play a pivotal role in meeting the needs of BBC Monitoring’s users by identifying news and key insights from TV, radio, newspapers and social media across West Africa, including Francophone countries. You will produce engaging content in English on a range of different platforms. You will work within a shift pattern, which may also be dictated by events as they happen.
You'll use a variety of tools and techniques to mine the media for story ideas, identify emerging trends and narratives and contribute to advance planning for coverage of key events.
Are you the right candidate?You'll have experience as a journalist, excellent writing skills and be able to identify material that makes a “high impact” story of interest to BBC Monitoring’s customers. You have a thorough understanding of the media environment of West Africa and good knowledge of political, cultural, religious and economic factors significant in the region.
You are willing and able to embrace new ways of working and new technology, and are constantly looking for ways to innovate.
You'll need a good working knowledge of French and any other key languages in West Africa.
The position involves shift work including evenings, but not nights.
Package DescriptionContract: 12 month fixed term contract (local terms and conditions)
Location: Lagos, Nigeria. Please note that no relocation package is available.
